Reactivity of metals with oxygen
Students were taken to the lab to demonstrate the reaction of magnesium ribbon with oxygen.
Magnesium burns in air to form a white ash and burns with a luminous flame.
When this white powder ash is dissolved in water and tested with a drop of phenopthalpheno indicator, the solution turns dark pink showing that the solution is basic in nature.
